“No! No, Liling!" Whatever was holding me lets go, and I scramble to the floor next to Liling, gathering her against me. I try to stem the blood, but there's too much.

"Mei," she whispers. She's not dead. Thank goodness. I can still undo this.

I ignore everything else going on around me. There's fighting and yelling, but I don't care about any of it.

The only person I can see is Liling. Her beautiful face, her lips fighting for breath.

I try to use healing magic, but I can't get it to work. No matter how hard I push my magic, I can’t access it. I can’t feel Tarsal or my mother’s soul, even though the ring is in its usual place on my finger. There's definitely something wrong with me, some kind of magic that’s preventing me from helping her. Tears drip down my face.

I’m not going to let this happen. "It's going to be okay, Liling. I'll get you out of here. I'll get you home."

She shakes her head, her eyes glazing over. "No, Mei. I can feel... Promise me..."

I lean in closer. "Promise what?"

“Make my death worth something... Do something important.”

I want to shake her and hug her at the same time. “You shouldn't have done that. You're the one with the goodness, the morals. You should have let him shoot me,” I whisper.

Liling closes her eyes. “I love you, Mei,” she murmurs. Her breath goes out... and doesn't come back in again.

“No! Liling, hold on. I'll find someone,” I say, glancing around me for the first time.

It's chaos.

The cavernous room is filled with fighting Mountain supers. Weapons clash, shouts ring out through the struggling mass of bodies. I search for someone I know, but even Elder Rasmussen and his man in black have disappeared.

"Come with me, Mei," says a hard voice behind me.

Carrick. He’s standing right in front of me, blocking me from the overwhelming mass of people.

“Oh thank God. Carrick, we have to find a healer. Someone who can help Liling.” My words are scrambled, and I can barely see him through the tears. But I know he’ll make everything better.

He glances down at Liling and doesn't say a word. He just gently pulls her out of my arms and into his. “Come with me, Mei,” he says again.

I follow his massive form without hesitation. He’ll find a way to save Liling. He has to. That’s the kind of thing Carrick’s good at. He leads a path through the fighting, and they part for him, almost like they can't help it. For the first time, I wonder where Carrick sits in the Mountain super hierarchy. I've never seen him here, only in places outside. Right now, he's sort of glowing.

But then I catch a glimpse of Liling's dark hair against his shoulder and I forget everything except the fact that the sister of my heart just stopped breathing in front of me, because of a bullet meant for me. “Hurry Carrick. We have to find someone who can help her.
